How to Use Reddit Without the Home Feed
Reddit is excellent when you go looking for something and a time sink when you land on the front page. Here's how to use Reddit without the home feed on an iPhone.
Reddit is one of the most useful sites on the internet, right up until the moment it's the least. Searching it for a specific answer is often better than searching anything else. Opening it with no particular question in mind is how forty minutes disappear.
The difference between those two experiences is entirely about where you land. Reddit opens on the front page, which is a ranked, infinite feed assembled for you, and there's no setting to turn that off.
What Reddit gives you natively
- Custom feeds. Group subreddits into a curated feed. Genuinely useful, but it's an extra feed alongside the front page, not a replacement for it.
- Sorting. Switching home to New rather than Best makes it less algorithmically compelling. It's still an infinite feed.
- old.reddit.com. The old interface is lighter and less engineered for engagement. It still has a front page.
- Muting subreddits. Removes specific communities from home. You're playing whack-a-mole with a ranking system that has plenty of other options.
None of these close the front page. They just change what's on it.
Closing the front page

Open Reddit from the Home tab

The blunter options
Screen Time limits. Under Settings → Screen Time → App Limits, cap Reddit or block it during set hours. Effective as a boundary and free, but it removes useful Reddit along with the front page, including the search you might have wanted mid-limit.
Search Reddit from a search engine. Appending `site:reddit.com` to a web search gets you Reddit's usefulness with none of its feed, and requires no app at all. Worth doing regardless of anything else on this page.
What you give up
Reddit's mobile website handles browsing, search, comments, voting, and posting. It's slower than the native app in places, and some moderation tooling is app- or desktop-first. If you moderate a large subreddit you'll want the native app for that work.
